That suggests that the public school-age illegal immigrant population has increased by about 38 percent since 1994 when the Urban Institute did its calculations.22 It is based on there being one school-aged illegal alien for about every six nonschool-aged illegal aliens. This is a conservative estimate, and it is less than eight percent higher than the states estimate of its illegal alien student population in public schools ten years ago.
